"We carry tears in our eyes: good-bye father, good-bye mother
We carry soil in small bags: may home never fade in our hearts We carry names, stories, memories of our villages, fields, boats We carry scars from proxy wars of greed" “THINGS WE CARRY ON THE SEA” BY WANG PING |
As I make these sketches of imagined vessels, entering into a virtual reality environment, using a new technology, I can't help but think of the future of our migrations as human beings, our experience of transformation and our capacity to adapt and change. When I make work in VR it is really not much different from making work in my studio, experimenting with new materials, allowing my imagination a free rein and being utterly absorbed in the concept, the emotion and the physical creation.
The recent terrible tragedy of 39 migrants found dead in a container truck in Essex is testament to the desperation felt by people in difficult circumstances, and the responsibility of us all to understand their dilemma - to stop this from happening again |
